FATHER AND TWO SONS.    vhs    jh-ad    (10 min)    Guide
A father's relationship with his children is a timely topic for today's youth. In this video, set on a contemporary horse ranch, the biblical story of a loving father is presented in stunning black and white images with an exciting blues vocal track performed by Rory Block. Here, a man's younger son demands his share of the property from his father, and leaves to go into the world beyond the family farm. When he is crushed by the world, he decides to go home, although he does not know how he will be received. He is welcomed by his overjoyed father who immediately commands that a banquet be prepared to honor him. While in many versions "The Prodigal Son" parable ends here, this version completes the biblical story by showing the father's loving encounter with his older son who is reluctant to join the celebration. A 24-page guide aids in the discussion of this story from Luke 15:11-32.

LISTEN TO THE CHILDREN!    vhs    ue-ad    (35 min.)
This video takes a look at the lives of children - their needs, fears, and hopes. To create this program, children at four church settings - Kingston, Jamaica; Flint, Michigan; Nashville, Tennessee; and Rabun County, Georgia - were given video cameras. Through singing, dance, drama, and interviews at these different United Methodist Church sites, the children’s concerns are made known to us. The results will surprise you! The 1996 General Conference and the Council of Bishops challenge every church to plan new and strengthened ministries to children in the church and in the community. As we respond to these challenges, we must be led by the children themselves. The video would make a good discussion starter or motivator for children’s programs within your own church.

LIVE LONG AND LOVE IT!   vhs    jh-ad    (30 min)    Guide

This is not a "down" message, but a positive, exciting look at what life has to offer those who pursue it. The video encourages everyone as it reveals the great truths and the tragic myths associated with human aging. It also shows how congregations can realize enlarged ministry through senior adults - how the graying of the church could become the growing of the church.

Effective family ministries are based upon ten principles that facilitate spiritual growth within the family. In the final analysis, Barna warns churches not to pursue the easy route of simply preaching more sermons about family matters, hiring staff devoted to family issues or creating more family-oriented programs.  Learn what your church can do to strengthen your families.

MY SON, MY SON.    vhs    jh-ad    (14 min)    Guide
This is the story of two fathers and their sons. It is a story of regret and loneliness, of forgiveness and renewed life. It looks with compassion at two different realities which are very much at issue in society today: homosexuality and AIDS. The presentation makes no pretense to argue for or against homosexual orientation, but goes far beyond that consideration to portray our need to respect and to love one another no matter how deep our differences. The human need for understanding, for tolerance, for caring, for compassion...for love, is graphically illustrated. The resource can be used in a number of contexts dealing with attitudes of prejudice, reconciliation, and openmindedness. The story is a take-off point for discussing many values which are a part of our Christian heritage.

UNPLUG YOUR KIDS.    vhs    ad    (15 min)    Guide
Dr. David Walsh, a nationally known child psychologist and author, anchors this powerful video. The program documents the power of television and other electronic media to exploit violence, sex, and materialism to our children, who are being harmed physically, morally, and spiritually. Mass media has changed dramatically in the last thirty years. Until adults become aware of the changes, we unintentionally contribute to the negative consequences that media has on our young people, our families, and our culture. The first step in changing this dynamic is becoming aware of the nature and process of mass media and the roles it plays in an individual household, and then in the community. The next step is to determine what changes need to be made to make the value messages in our children's lives more consistent. And the last is to make this conversation a community conversation.
